Concrete, asphalt and missing vegetation make cities warm faster during the day and, more importantly, give up their stored heat far more slowly at night. The result is that the centre of a large city can stay several degrees warmer than the surrounding area even after sunset, when natural cooling should already have begun.

That effect accumulates as the heat wave continues, because a night that brings no real cooling means the body has no time to recover before another day of exposure to high temperatures. It is exactly why prolonged urban heat waves can be far more severe for health than individual days of extreme heat at the same recorded maximum.
