UK storm names don’t come from a single weather service working alone. Since 2015, the Met Office has jointly run the naming scheme with Met Éireann, Ireland’s national meteorological service, and later with KNMI, the Dutch meteorological institute. All three take turns contributing names to the same rotating alphabetical list each storm season.

Why three countries share one list

Storms crossing the North Atlantic rarely respect national borders. A system that produces damaging winds across Ireland one day frequently moves on to affect the UK, and sometimes the Netherlands, within the same 24 to 48 hours. Before the joint scheme began, each country could potentially assign a different name to what was, meteorologically, the same storm system, creating exactly the kind of confusion that naming is supposed to prevent.

The Met Office, Met Éireann, and KNMI jointly name storms affecting the UK, Ireland, and the Netherlands from a single shared list, specifically because storm systems frequently cross all three countries within the same event.

The joint list runs alphabetically each storm season, which in the UK convention runs September through August, and skips Q, U, X, Y, and Z to match international tropical cyclone naming conventions. Names are contributed by public submissions each year, giving the list a distinctly different character from the more formal naming conventions used for hurricanes.

What actually triggers a name

Not every windy day produces a named storm. The joint services use a specific impact-based system: a storm gets named when it’s expected to cause medium or high wind impacts across the affected countries, based on both the strength of the wind and how widely it’s likely to be felt, not wind speed in isolation. A storm bringing severe winds to a small, sparsely populated area might not meet the naming threshold, while a somewhat less intense system affecting densely populated regions across multiple countries could.

This impact-based approach explains why storm naming can feel inconsistent from the outside. It isn’t measuring the storm in isolation. It’s measuring the storm against how many people and how much infrastructure are likely to be affected.

What happens when a storm crosses into a different naming zone

Storm naming gets more complicated when a system that formed and was named elsewhere, such as a former hurricane crossing the Atlantic, arrives in UK waters. In these cases, the joint UK, Ireland, and Netherlands naming group generally keeps the storm’s original name rather than assigning a new one, provided it retains enough of its original characteristics to be considered the same system. This avoids the confusion of the same storm carrying two completely different names as it crosses from one region’s naming authority to another’s.

This cross-naming convention reflects the same underlying goal as the joint UK-Ireland-Netherlands list itself: consistency of communication matters more than which authority happened to name the storm first.

Why the name matters beyond just tracking

A named storm carries genuine communication value once it’s assigned. Media coverage, government advisories, and public warnings can all reference the same name, making it far easier for the public to follow a single event across several days of coverage than if the same storm were referred to inconsistently across different sources.

Track the storm behind the name

Knowing how and why a storm gets its name is useful context, but the name itself doesn’t carry information about current intensity or exact track, that comes from the warning attached to it, not the label. A named storm can weaken significantly by the time it reaches a specific location, or intensify further than initially expected.
