When is hurricane season in Barbados?

Hurricane season in Barbados runs from 1 June to 30 November. Most activity falls between mid-August and mid-October, and 10 September is the climatological peak, according to the National Hurricane Center.

A hurricane starts as a cluster of thunderstorms over warm ocean water. Warm, moist air rises from the sea surface. The air pressure near the surface drops, and more air flows in. The rotation of the Earth makes this air spin, anticlockwise in the Northern Hemisphere. Weak winds high in the atmosphere let the system organise. A system with a closed circulation is called a tropical depression. It becomes a tropical storm when its winds strengthen, and the National Hurricane Center gives it a name. It becomes a hurricane when its winds reach hurricane strength.

Sea temperatures around Barbados are highest in late summer. This is the time of the most storm activity. Late in the season, many storms start as tropical waves that leave West Africa and cross the Atlantic Ocean. Barbados is the easternmost island in the Caribbean, so storms from the Atlantic Ocean often reach it first.
