When is cyclone season in Karnataka?

Cyclone season in Karnataka has two parts. Cyclones form from March to June, before the summer monsoon, and from October to December, after it. The peaks come in May and November, according to the India Meteorological Department.

A cyclone starts as a cluster of thunderstorms over warm ocean water. Warm, moist air rises from the sea surface. The air pressure near the surface drops, and more air flows in. The rotation of the Earth makes this air spin, anticlockwise in the Northern Hemisphere. Weak winds high in the atmosphere let the system organise. A system with a closed circulation is called a tropical depression. It becomes a tropical storm when its winds strengthen, and the India Meteorological Department gives it a name. It becomes a cyclone when its winds reach cyclone strength.

Sea temperatures around Karnataka are warm before and after the summer monsoon. These are the two periods of the most storm activity. Cyclones form over the warm water of the Arabian Sea. Cyclones usually pass west of Karnataka over the Arabian Sea. Mangalore lies on the coast.
